My Writing Life

Welcome to my website ‘My Writing Life.’  I hope you enjoy reading my various poetry, prose, flash fiction, blogs, snippets and narrative associated with what has been an amazing personal and professional journey. It is designed to share with you a life in perpetual transition. From my wonderful and inspiring career as a registered nurse and nurse academic, to that of creative writer and publisher of a variety of books designed to develop my skill as a writer. These books bear testament to a life lived and the importance of having a family who truly loved me and only ever wanted the best for me. Whilst these books are only available to a small number of family and friends, my website is designed to make my writing available to a wider audience. I am sure you will find it of interest.

I began my writing career in 2012 and since then have published a plethora of academic papers, blogs and now more recently a chapter for an international book, which focuses on the value of coaching in higher education.

I am currently undertaking an MA in Creative Writing with Teeside University. This will be my third masters.  My first being in nursing and my second in education. I am certainly a glutton for punishment. I am simply exploring the trials and tribulations of writing with others who simply enjoy the pleasures of writing.

The various pages will share with you the story of why I write. It will share with you the long and often winding road of life itself and my life as a nurse and now creative writer.

Whilst I have not quite retired from professional life, I now have more time to indulge in the opportunities that come my way. It really is true – the more doors we open the more open for us. I was never going to sit and twiddle my thumbs, I was always going to want to have new adventures, to meet new people and simply try new things.

About Me

This is an excerpt from my chapter entitled Why I write from the book Creative Writing Heals volume 7. published by one of the most inspirational community based organisations I have ever had the privilege to be involved with.

“Why I write”

I write to communicate. To tell my story, and that of others. I write to shine a light on the past; warts and all. I write to reflect on life’s experiences; characters and events merge as narratives are brought to life. Through writing I gain new insight and new insight brings new opportunities. Perhaps even catharsis.

I write to illuminate the present and inform the future; one we may not be ready for. This moment of writing has already become the past. How fleeting that moment is and yet, how important. I write to ease the pain and suffering of life; the anxiety and the stress and equally to share the joyous moments that befall us all. I write because I choose to; because I can.

I write to share my experiences as a woman, an activist and a feminist. I am angered at the impact of misogyny; racism and inequality; violence and hate. I write to share political writing and personal viewpoints. I write to illuminate injustice; to shine a light on the heroines and heroes of our time and those of yesterday. I write because personal narratives need to be told.

I write to expand my language; to evoke a memory of a feeling long since buried. I write to provoke a response. I write to call forth; to summon; to speak my truth. I write to empower, to make sense of life and the world in which we live. I write to connect with who I am. To strengthen my voice. To gain insight. To understand.
