If you could turn back time...
I joined a Creative Writing Inspirations course in 2023. A course, along with many more run by Converge, an organisation linked with York St John University. It is an amazing organisation that supports fledgling writers like myself to develop their work. I said I would never write poetry. Never. Ever. Ever. I wasn’t good enough. Well I was! Positive feedback for my first poem sealed my fate. I was hooked.
Poetry does not have to rhyme, nor does it have to make complete sense. And why did I write this Anthology of Poetry [and prose]? that’s easy, because despite my lack of self-belief I now love writing poetry and I’m good at it. Or, perhaps I should let you decide.
If you could turn back time…
What if…
You could turn back time,
And change what you did?
What would you do differently?
What would you say?
Would you be a fly on the wall?
An observer of time itself?
What would you want to know?
Would you be prepared,
For what you might see or hear?
Witness.
Would you still want to meet your husband?
Your wife?
Marry?
Not marry?
Have children?
Not have children?
Would you still catch the train on that fateful day?
Or would you catch the bus instead?
Go in the car?
Or simply have a duvet day?
But you never know, do you?
What you might set in motion.
What horror you might evoke.
Equally what joy.
If you do ever get the chance to turn back time,
And who knows what life will bring.
I implore you,
Be careful what you wish for.
Because all that glitters… is most definitely not gold
