The world will remember
It will be 60 years since the Aberfan disaster on 21st October 2026. In that time the world has moved on. Unable to live with the grief, their torment, some of the families moved on too. Many parents are now with their children. The decade thereafter will no doubt, bring further change.
Certainly there will be many events held to commemorate a disaster that shook the world. May it shear off the rooftops. May it galvanise a nation. Drag it kicking and screaming from its apathy.
1966 – a time when England won the World Cup. A time when the Beatles rode the waves of success, when one of the most popular programmes in television history, Star Trek, hit our TV screens and a time when tiny children in the village of Aberfan became collateral damage. When the lives of the poor became collateral damage.
Perhaps as a nation, we have not, after all, moved on.
