They said it wouldn't happen

So many children.
A mining tragedy.
An inconceivable horror.

They said it wouldn’t happen.
But happen it did.
Despite the stark warnings.

It raged down the mountain.
The slag heap. No one could stop it.
Those who heard it, would never forget.

Those who witnessed it, would see it
again and again. It became ingrained.
Nothing would ever erase it.

They said it wouldn’t happen.
But happen it did.
So many children. So many lives.

They said they would learn lessons.
What was there to learn?
They knew of the dangers.

Another tragedy is about to unfold.
Pray it’s not your children involved.
But it will be someone’s.
